Chapter 1

1.5 Hypotheses can be tested using a controlled experiment

Vocabulary

  • Independent variable: n the variable that can be changed
  • Dependent variable: n the variable that can be measured
  • Controlled variable: n the variable that stays the same
  • Controlled experiment: n an experiment where all the factors are controlled

Summary

Before an experiment, scientists need to make a hypothesis about what will be the result of the experiment. The factors are called the dependent variables, controlled variables and the independent variables. Controlled experiments compare variables that are all the same, EXCEPT they only change one variable, so they can compare the outcome of that variable with the other constants.
